Triage project

The triage project has been running since the 1st of February 2022. The aim is to make the most of the currently available funds for health care.

An online triage system was set up, consisting of a team of doctors (primary care physicians and ward doctors), pharmacists and employees of a refugee protection organisation. The latter takes a medical history from patients who come to them for medical assistance. With the patient’s consent, their anonymised history is shared with the broader medical team. The patient is triaged and advised to access either: a primary care physician associated with the project, the local emergency department or online services from the HUMANN team for advice or a prescription. All of these options are available for free or at a reduced price.

Historically, an undocumented migrant trying to access health care services, would require a voucher from an NGO to access primary care. The NGO would then assess each individual case and where possible pay the invoice of the primary care physician. This convoluted process was reliant on the patient themselves and was costly both in time and money.

Project HUMANN arranges a patient’s medical appointment or prescription directly through our online system. This is much easier for the patient, cheaper and improves their health care. Our triage system has also identified that many applicants, do not necessarily require an in-person consultation either with a primary care physician or an emergency doctor. By redirecting low risk patients to alternative services, the refugee protection organisation has saved two thirds of its annual budget, meaning that we can help three times as many people as before.
