Health care for Undocumented Migrants on Aruba
Project HUMANN aims to improve the availability of health care for undocumented migrants in Aruba. Approximately one in six inhabitants of Aruba is an undocumented migrant. They seldom have health insurance and often have scarce financial resources. Unless it is a life-threatening situation, the current healthcare options on the island are limited. There are few NGOs on the island and those that exist have small budgets for health care and can provide little financial aid per patient. Project HUMANN will support and expand upon existing healthcare services for undocumented migrants.
Project HUMANN
The triage project has been running since the 1st of February 2022. The project aims to utilise existing funds for healthcare more effectively. An online triage system was installed to assess which patients required either: an in-person medical consultation, a prescription, or online advice. This system enabled the existing NGO funds to manage and treat three times as many patients as they had done the year before.
Our long-term goal is to establish an externally funded, politically independent healthcare clinic in Aruba for undocumented migrants. Health care will be provided by general practitioners and midwives. There will be a particular focus on HIV/STD prevention and treatment, diabetes management, dental health, and mental health care.
